What drew you to your career?
I have always pursued opportunities to learn and have new experiences. Engineering offered a pathway to collaborate on technical issues to solve problems and create something new. My early career as a consultant was shaped by the millennium drought which required many different types of industries to pursue water efficiency measures. My focus shifted to water treatment during the roll-out of fluoride in Queensland, and then expanded into other aspects of water treatment. In more recent years I’ve pursued qualifications in project management and business, and had the opportunity to lead the planning phases of major and mega infrastructure projects including water treatment, water supply schemes, and dams across Queensland.
What does unlocking hidden value mean to you?
To me it means understanding the original intent of a project, but also recognising opportunities to provide added benefits. It’s asking questions, posing scenarios, having collaborative discussions, and knowing when to take off the blinkers (and when to put them back on again and focus on delivery).
What is your favourite part of your role?
I like working across multidisciplinary, multi-year projects where the team works collaboratively to build a vision for the project that addresses the service need, integrates with existing operations, and ideally provides tangible and intangible benefits to the broader community. I like having broad visibility over a project and getting to shift my focus from the detail to the macro, planning days ahead then years ahead, and considering the perspectives, pressures, and priorities of different stakeholders.
What is your proudest achievement, greatest learning, career highlight?
I’m most proud when collaboration pays off, a great idea comes from an unexpected place, and I can facilitate the adoption of that idea by successfully navigating the project governance.
What are your passions, hobbies, interests outside of work?
I’m creative at heart. I like sewing, writing, and I’m always taking classes. I’m no expert at anything, but I enjoy learning new skills.
