What drew you to your career?

Initially, I was looking for a career that allowed for a practical application of maths and science – subjects I loved. I saw civil engineering as a way to do that.

I also wanted to be involved in projects and infrastructure that are long-lasting and meet a community need. This led to my early career involvement in the areas of water treatment and transport infrastructure projects.

What is your favourite part of your role?

The favourite aspect of my role is the teamwork – working with good teams of people and collaborating to overcome various project challenges and to explore and realise opportunities on projects.

What does unlocking hidden value mean to you?

Opportunities on projects are not always evident at the beginning. Value can be found by making a small change to the way something is done, or exploring alternative methods. I enjoy finding these areas of opportunity that aren’t initially obvious.

What is your proudest achievement, greatest learning?

A career highlight is the opportunity I was given to be involved in the team constructing the Hunter Expressway near Newcastle. I worked alongside a great team of people from the Contractor, Client and Design companies who formed the Hunter Expressway Alliance. It was a unique experience to see genuine teamwork from people who worked for different organisations but were brought together in a “One Team” approach to deliver a challenging section of the highway through the Sugarloaf Range above old underground mines.

A key learning from this experience was that “onsite” collaboration between construction, design and client teams can arrive at excellent solutions much quicker than the usual means.

What are your passions, hobbies, and interests outside of work?

I enjoy going for a run or a morning bike ride and have always enjoyed going with my family to the amazing east coast beaches. I also enjoy team sport, whether that be Saturday mornings cheering on my children, or supporting the Lions in AFL.
